Rant Against Babyists

There are all manner if -ists in this world—misogynists, racists, agists—each group's creed is equally deplorable. Since having Claire, Dave and I have now been exposed to a new breed of intolerance, focused on none other than our sweet, guileless, tenderhearted Claire (I know it is quite shocking to me too). In general most people love the little tyke, but there are a few out there who can't stomach the wee one. We call them "babyists". We have encountered these "types" mainly in airports, at the movies and at restaurants. The funny thing is, I can can understand how a person looking for some serenity in a cafe, or an escape at the movies would mind a yelping kid, but before Claire even makes a peep some are already put out. Dave and I were turned away from two restaurants last week, one because the folded stroller posed a "fire hazard" and the second because they were simply "too booked" (meanwhile, we spotted at least eight very empty tables). We were also turned away from the movie theater—no babies after 6pm. Judged before even entering, Claire still open-mouthed smiled at the babyists and even let out a happy babble. I glowered as we ended up at Burger Heaven the first night and a second rate Italian joint the second night. Claire didn't seem to mind the surrounding though, and even had time to win over some of the regulars.

I was in the grocery store last year and these 3 stupid young girls looked at each other and said, "can you believe someone would bring 3 kids to the store?". I was livid, I was under the impression that was the only socially acceptable place you could actually takes kids. So as I approached them I stopped and said, "you know, some people don't have a choice". They looked at my like "oh crap she heard". What morons!

Such a bummer....we should stage some sort of protest for places like that in the city!

Um, I adore cute little ones and I heart Baby C with every fiber of my being, but I have to admit... I too am a babyist at the theater. Giiiirl, why you tryin' to bring yo baby and yo baby daddy to the movies outside of mommy-and-me-matinees? I'll grant you the restaurant situation-- that's crazy! No restaurant should turn away a someone with a baby-- this is America for crying out loud... oh, wait, bad idiom choice.
