Chicken Little

Last week, Claire said her fourth word and it left me puzzling over it for several days. So what was it? If the picture didn't give it away already, "chicken". It wasn't so much the word that left me puzzled, but more the timing of the word. First word, "da-da"—I hear that is pretty standard (some throw back from evolution where children say their father's name first to remind them they are their blood and not prey). Second word, "baby"—again, typical, as they are seen frequently, have a catchy pronunciation and always commented on. Third word, "doggy"—definitely a NYC mainstay and Claire's biggest street competition for oohs and aahs. Fourth word, "chicken". What? I know, it was said while Dave was reading a book on farm animals, but, what?

On the tail of Claire's fourth word, came her much anticipated fifth word, "ma-ma". Granted "ma-ma" should have been her first word with the amount of time I spend coaching her in the fine nuances of the word. Regardless, it was music to my ears, even though it was said at 4:30am when Dave brought crying Claire to me in bed. But still, I reflect, "da-da", "baby", "doggy", "chicken" and then "ma-ma"? What does a girl have to do to be first, second, or even third in her girl's vocab? Do chickens stand out more than mothers? Do feathers and waddles make me less interesting than feeders (i.e. the nursing station on my chest) and comforting arms? I am perplexed, but still ever so grateful that my wee one finally knows my name.

haha, you're funny Tara. But at the same time, this would be my blog as well if I was in the situation.

James said "banana" first. I don't even remember when "mama" came about. Now I sort of wish he didn't know it. Ben can't do anything for him. It's "mama carry," "mama do it," "no daddy, mama." It's down right annoying that I have to be the one to find his binky at 2:00 a.m. Isn't Ben equally capable? I should post this rant on on my blog, not yours. Sorry. I'm glad Claire finally got "mama" nailed down for you. Congrats! You're coming to Utah soon, right? We can't wait to see you all.

My only comparison is when Kyle and I babysit other kids. For some crazy reason, I get jealous when they go to Kyle first. But only for a second, because really they wear you out!! So I can only imagine that I wouldn't be too happy about a chicken beating me out. :) However, the fact that she's saying such important words like chicken, is credit to your motherly abilities!!

It's all that PioPio love she's inherited. Although, the ch- and k-sounds are pretty advanced... more so than ma-ma. She just skipped ahead because she wanted to confirm she's a genius!

The truth be know kids say what is easier for them first and then progress as they learn to mimic and form words in their development. We all know Mama is always the favorite at first.

Chicken-I think that is the first time I've ever heard that one! I think that kids think of their mommy as an extension of themselves so maybe that's why they don't always catch on to "mama" so fast. Then again, Jada's first two words were "wow" and "Aka" (the name of the dog at the place where we were housesitting at the time), so I'm probably thinking up excuses for myself too. :)
